The college is the oldest Catholic College, founded in 1850. Originally based in Hammersmith, it moved to its current location in Twickenham in 1925. The college was originally an all-male teacher-training college. Teacher training continues as a core function but the college now offers a wide range of other subjects in the humanities, social sciences, management and sport science. St Mary's is a College of the University of Surrey which awards the college's undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through an accreditation agreement. The college continues to be a Catholic College responsible to the Church through the Catholic Education Service.
